April 22, 2013 - Dean Matthew Diller has announced that Hon. Dianne T. Renwick of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Department, will address graduates at Cardozo School of Law’s 35th Commencement Ceremony.
Justice Renwick began her legal career at the Criminal Division of the Legal Aid Society. She joined the judiciary in 1997, when she was appointed a New York City Housing Court Judge. She was later elected to the New York City Civil Court, and in 2001 she was elected to the New York State Supreme Court. Justice Renwick is the first African American to serve in the First Judicial Department of the State Supreme Court.
She is greatly involved in the legal community. Justice Renwick has taught at several law school- and bar association-sponsored trial advocacy programs, and has served on numerous committees, including the Governor's Task Force on Judicial Diversity and the Second Circuit Task Force on Gender and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts.
She is a member of the Cardozo Board of Overseers and has been very active as an alumna of the school. In 2011, she was chosen as the Cardozo Alumna of the Year. In 2009, Justice Renwick was honored by BALLSA (Black Asian Latino Law Students Association) and CARDOZO WOMEN for her professional achievements, dedication to Cardozo, and commitment to public service. She is married to Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson.
Justice Renwick has played a large role in building community between Cardozo students and graduates, and brings enormous integrity to her work. Commencement will take place May 28 at 4 p.m. at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center.
